The incumbent council member in Riviera Beach District 4, Dawn Pardo, has served about 10 years and four terms and never had a challenger for that Singer Island seat...until now.
Pardo tells us why Dr. Julia Botel is running to replace her.
"My challenger made it clear to us that she decided to run against me because of the termination of the city manager."
Botel admits that's why she's running, adding that the current council brought on a replacement for Jonathan Evans who was unqualified and withdrew from the position.
"Jonathan Evans has taken another position. He may never be available to us again, but I certainly want to find someone as qualified as he was for this critically important position in this city."
In the audio players above, hear more from Botel on things she wants to "fix" in Riviera Beach, and hear Pardo's reasons for voting to fire the city manager.
In the audio player below, Dr. Botel responds to what she calls a "smear" campaign from her opponent. She says she received an advertising card in the mail from the Pardo campaign that said Botel had Mexican drug runners living in her Singer Island condo and wasn't aware of it.
Botel says the people to whom her condo unit was rented while she was living elsewhere were brought in by a company and she never met them. She claims she wasn't aware that there was a DEA raid at her unit until after it happened.
Both races in Riviera Beach are open to all voters in the city.
