First Locally-Acquired Zika Case In Florida This Year

Aedes aegypti

The Florida Department of Health has confirmed the first case of locally transmitted Zika virus in 2017.

The case was reported in Bradenton.

A person started feeling symptoms after returning from a trip to Cuba with their partner, and officials found the person infected while in Cuba was bitten by a mosquito in Manatee County. That mosquito then bit the person’s partner.

There is no indication that there is an ongoing transmission of the Zika virus in the area.

There have so far been 187 cases of the Zika virus in Florida this year.  154 of them were travel-related.
