Petition Drive To Replace Confederate Monument With Snooty Statue

Snooty the Manatee Petition

As folks continue to mourn the loss of the world's oldest manatee, residents in Manatee County, where "Snooty" lived since the 1940's have started a petition to replace a Confederate monument with a statue, honoring the manatee.

The petition has over 4,000 signatures.

The man who started it says the Confederate monument that now stands in front of the old Manatee County courthouse in Bradenton could be moved to another location to make way for Snooty's monument.

Anthony Pusateri indicates that the petition will be presented to the Manatee County Commission.

There was also a short-lived petition drive to name a new high school after "Snooty."

The manatee had just turned 69 over the weekend, when someone left a gate to an off-limits area unbolted in Snooty's exhibit area at the South Florida Museum.  He wound up stuck while trying to pass through it.
