When it comes to drivers who ignore parking tickets, one local city is giving the boot to...well, the boot.
While the city of Stuart has only had to use the old method three times during the first half of the year, the traditional boot that goes around a tire, to keep violating vehicles from moving, code compliance officials say they need as many as three people to get it done. And there always has to be a police officer standing by to keep an eye on traffic for those who are fitting the boot on the car.
That's why the city has purchased the Barnacle, for $600.
It goes on the windshield and an officer punches in an access code to make it attach, putting 700 pounds of pressure to the glass. If someone tries to drive away with the device on their windshield, an alarm goes off and it has a built in GPS.
Once the driver pays the fine, they will receive an access code to remove the Barnacle and then return it to authorities within 24 hours.
