The Palm Beach County School Board is expected to finalize a plan to get exempted from a state law changing school start times.

Board members will discuss the plan at tonight's meeting.

Erica Whitfield says she understands the reasoning behind the law.

"When it first came out I was really excited about that because I wanted to make sure that our students were getting more sleep."

But she tells CBS 12 News that forcing middle schools to start no earlier than 8 a.m. and high schools no earlier than 8:30 a.m. would cause too many problems.

"It's hard to do a huge change like this in such a huge community."

Whitfield says the school district doesn't have enough bus drivers to drive the buses to cover the start times being adjusted.

That's why the school board is likely to approve a plan to support a bill that will be taken up in the Legislature this March. It would allow school districts to opt out of the school time changes, under certain circumstances.
