Bill To Make Texting & Driving A Primary Offense Heads To Senate

Text And Drive

A bill in the Florida Senate that would make texting while driving a primary offense has cleared enough committee votes to make it to the chamber floor.

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development voted in favor of Senate Bill 90 on Tuesday.

According to the National Safety Council, more than 100,000 crashes each year involve drivers who are texting behind the wheel.

As it stands, police in Florida have to pull someone over for another infraction in order to cite them for texting.  This bill would mean cops could pull over drivers that they catch in the act, even if they're not breaking any other laws.

No word yet on when the Senate will vote.

A similar bill in the House, co-sponsored by Palm Beach County State Representative Emily Slosberg, has one more committee stop before the full House votes.
