WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —More than one week after Hurricane Dorian tore through the Bahamas, relief workers are still discovering survivors in remote locations around the islands. Some of these people have not had anything to eat or anywhere to sleep since the storm hit.

Thursday, a group of volunteers and philanthropists from the Mastroianni family and Medicorps rode on a Black Hawk helicopter to a remote location in Treasure Cay where 50 survivors were discovered just last night. Reality TV star Lawson Bates has been volunteering in Marsh Harbour with Medicorps, and he assisted with this mission.

"As of yesterday, we found an area of 40 or 50 people that nobody knew was there," Bates explained. "And that's the problem, there’s these little pockets of people who don’t know where to go for supplies. They don’t have any communication, no cellphones... so even though they might be close to a relief station, they don’t know how to get there or where to go." Bates told CBS12.

CBS12 News crews rode along for the relief flight on a Black Hawk helicopter. Some locals in Treasure Cay said that they haven't had electricity or clean water since the storm hit. The Mastroianni Family Foundation pledges to help people like these for as long as they can. "We're committed to help these people for as long as we can and for as long as they need help," said Nicholas Mastroianni. "This is a major catastrophe. it’s the apocalypse out there."
