FPL has been given permission to charge customers if they choose to decline the installation of a smart meter.

The state Public Service Commission gave its approval on Tuesday to allow Florida Power & Light to charge a one-time $95 enrollment fee and a $13 monthly surcharge.

The Juno-Beach based power company wanted to charge $105 and $16 monthly to more than 2,000 Palm Beach County residents and small businesses that have refused a smart meter or failed to allow installers access.

FPL officials believe that number will go down considerably once the extra fees take effect in May.
