The mayor of Boynton Beach believes that 17 city police officers who called in sick on two shifts yesterday may have done so because of ongoing contentious contract negotiations between the city and the police union.

Jerry Taylor told the Palm Beach Post that the officers may have been trying to make a statement after potentially hearing something they didn't like, but either way he said safety is not a concern.

The local president of the Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association denies the sick call-ins were connected to contract differences.
